For me, it's very much a case of discovering the poetry and lyrics before getting into the music. I love them because they were the antithesis of the hippy thing, peace and love and all that. They were more realistic about life, love, death, the darker side of humanity. They are, in my opinion, the first of the goth movement. Seriously!
i think that the outstanding live performances from early days were indeed neglected!they could have awaken any drunkard from off his seat in asingle second!
The doors were indeed the first band in history to reveal the dark side of theatre and musical art not just in the music but in the lyrics and attitude. though i can not deny the feeling of truth to the dark side and life and death itself presented within the song structure and lyrics. Jim once said, the music gives "a mood of mystery and strangness/ a mood or atmosphere that can be charactorized as an awareness of the strange" In that sense I've gotten the vibes that the words of morrison were built by the visionary experiences as a shaman, that poeticly reveal the truth of the world and the secrets of his soul and possibly the future events still instored for our planet
